Overview
Wayfarer is a place for travelers to discover new locations to visit around the world. Although it doesn’t directly sell any trips, flights, or accommodation on the site, people use it as a tool for researching where to travel next, based on their preferences. Wayfarer’s target audience is anyone between the ages of 21 and 30 who travels frequently and is in search of new adventures.
Task One: Landing Page Design
Design the homepage that users will see when they first find Wayfarer.
The design must show featured destinations, explain briefly what Wayfarer is, and include a call-to-action to sign up for the newsletter.
Process: Low Fidelity Wireframes
I started the design process for Wayfarer by sketching low-fidelity wireframes to map out the landing page layout.
During the sketching process I prioritized simplicity and clarity in presenting information for Wayfarer. I centered the design around a seamless navigation experience, allowing the visuals to effectively communicate the site’s message.
Process: Color Selection
Leaning into Wayfarer’s “new adventures” messaging, I chose a warm orange to convey enthusiasm, paired with a deep blue for balance and a sense of safety throughout the website.
I kept the target audience ages of 21-30 in mind while developing the color palette, typography, and overall simplicity.
Process: High Fidelity Wireframes
During the high fidelity process, I implemented the color set and Wayfarer imagery to the initial layout to create a captivating landing page.
For the homepage, my goal was to use a simple yet impactful image that serves as a strong backdrop for the heading text, ensuring clear visual hierarchy. I focused on making the logo, heading, and subheading easily legible, enhancing the overall user experience.
The “Popular Destinations” section invites users to explore new travel options, offering brief descriptions with an option to read more.
To emphasize the “new adventures” theme, I created a section titled “Discover Your Next Adventure,” and selected images with people to help users envision themselves in those settings.
The “New to Traveling?” section encourages users to sign up for the newsletter. I placed a compelling image to prompt sign-ups, rather than positioning the call-to-action in the footer where it might be overlooked.
Task Two: Mobile App Design
The second deliverable involved creating three sample screens for an iOS mobile smartphone app that coordinates with the design of the landing page.
The first designed screen is the sign-up page, featuring the hero image from the website.
The second screen is the information page, which users will access after selecting “Learn More” about a specific location.
Finally, the third screen is the search page, allowing users to explore destinations of their choice for more information.
